Parable is not an alternative to Planning Center — it reads Planning Center. The real question is whether the reports already included are enough, and for a lot of churches they are.

The short answer
Planning Center reports beautifully inside a product: a Services report about Services, a Giving report about Giving. What it cannot do is join them. Parable exists for the questions that cross products — which volunteers stopped giving, which families in groups stopped attending — and for asking anything nobody built a report for.
Who should choose which
Parable reads Planning Center, so this is not a rivalry. It is one question: whether the reports you already pay nothing for are enough.
Choose Planning Center alone if…
- You are under about 200 people. The built-in dashboards will genuinely do.
- Your questions are about one product at a time — who is scheduled, what came in.
- Nobody on staff has time to learn a second tool, however simple.
- Budget is the constraint. Planning Center Home costs nothing on top of what you already pay.
- You are a church plant — Planning Center has free tiers you should use first.

What Planning Center gives you
Two correct answers to two different questions. Services knows exactly who is on your teams and how often they serve. Giving knows exactly who gave and when. Both are good reports and both are already included — Home comes free with your subscription and its dashboards and metrics are genuinely useful. What no built-in report does is put those two lists beside each other, because they live in separate products. So you export both, match them by name in a spreadsheet, and rediscover that Mike Andrews and Michael Andrews are one person.
What Parable gives you
One question, typed as a sentence, answered as a list of households — because Parable syncs every Planning Center product nightly onto one person record and reconciles identities once rather than every time you ask. The follow-ups then cost nothing: of the volunteers who stopped giving, which stopped attending too, and which have been serving twice a month all year while quietly giving nothing since January.
None of that is a failing of Planning Center. A system of record is supposed to keep each product clean and separate; joining them afterwards is a reporting job, and reporting is the whole of what Parable is.

Conceding the ground they hold
When Planning Center alone is the right answer
When your questions live inside one product at a time. Who is scheduled this Sunday, what came in last month, which groups have space — Planning Center answers all of those natively, and there is no reason to pay anyone for a second opinion on them.
When you are small. Under about two hundred people you can hold the whole church in your head, and Home's dashboards will mostly confirm what you already suspected. Parable's value scales with the number of people you cannot personally keep track of, which is a polite way of saying it is wasted on a small church.
When budget is the constraint, and especially if you are planting. Home costs nothing on top of what you already pay, there is a year free for church planters, and eligible churches can get twelve months of Giving free. Take all of that first. We will still be here in a year, and you will be a better customer with a year of clean data behind you.
And when nobody has the appetite for another login. That is a real cost and we are not going to pretend otherwise — a tool your staff do not open is worse than no tool at all, whatever it can do.
Our own weak spots
Where Parable is the wrong choice
- We are another login and another subscription, on top of one you already pay for.
- Planning Center Home is free and its dashboards are good. Plenty of churches genuinely do not need us, and we would rather say so than sell you a second tool.
- We can only read what your team actually records. If check-ins are patchy or groups are not kept current, Parable will show you that very clearly and then be much less useful than the demo suggested.
- Nothing we do changes how your church runs day to day. Cancel tomorrow and Planning Center carries on exactly as it does now — which is the point, and also a limit on how indispensable we can ever be.

Does Parable replace Planning Center?
No, and it cannot. Parable has no data of its own — it reads Planning Center every night and writes nothing back unless you switch on custom fields and notes on people, which puts what it finds where your team already works. You keep Planning Center exactly as it is, your team keeps working in it exactly as they do, and Parable sits on top as a reporting layer. If you cancelled Parable tomorrow, nothing about how your church runs would change.
Isn't Planning Center's reporting enough?
For a lot of churches, yes — and we would rather say so than sell you something you do not need. Planning Center Home includes dashboards and metrics at no extra cost, and if your questions are about one product at a time they answer them well. The gap opens when a question crosses products, because no built-in report joins Giving to Check-Ins to Groups. That is when people start exporting to spreadsheets, and that is the job Parable takes over.
What can Parable answer that Planning Center cannot?
Anything that needs two products to talk to each other. Which of our volunteers have stopped giving. Which families in a small group have stopped attending. Whether people in groups give more than people who are not. Who came every week last autumn and has not been seen since Easter. Each of those is one question in Parable and three exports plus a spreadsheet otherwise.
Do we need to change how our team uses Planning Center?
No. The connection is authorised by one of your Planning Center Organization Administrators, with Giving Administrator access, and is revocable from your Planning Center account at any time. Parable reads across your Planning Center products and writes nothing back unless you opt in to custom fields and notes on people. Nobody changes their workflow, and no data is migrated anywhere.
Is Planning Center's reporting free?
Yes. Planning Center Home is included with every subscription at no extra cost, and it covers dashboards, metrics for big-picture data, church-wide activity, product-specific reports and shareable dashboards. Use it — it is good, and it is already paid for. Parable is only worth adding once your questions stop fitting inside a single product.
Does Planning Center have AI or natural-language reporting?
Not that they claim. When we read their pages on 24 July 2026, no AI or ask-a-question features were described anywhere in Home or the product reports. Their reporting works the traditional way: you pick a report or build a list. That is a perfectly good way to work, and it is why the real question on this page is whether you need to ask things nobody built a report for.
We are a church plant. Should we buy Parable?
Almost certainly not yet. Planning Center gives church planters a year free and eligible churches twelve months of Giving free, and at plant scale you know everyone by name without a tool. Spend the year filling Planning Center with good data instead. Do that and Parable's first sync a year from now will be worth having; buy us now and we will mostly be reading an empty database back to you.
What does Parable write back to Planning Center?
Nothing, unless you switch it on. The connection is read-only by default. There is an opt-in write-back that puts custom fields and notes on people — only on people, nothing else — so that what Parable finds shows up where your team already works. It is authorised by one of your Planning Center Organization Administrators, with Giving Administrator access, and revocable from your Planning Center account whenever you want.

Home is included free with every Planning Center subscription and covers dashboards, church-wide activity, product-specific reports, metrics for big-picture data and shareable dashboards. No AI or natural-language querying is claimed anywhere on those pages. They also offer a year free to church planters and twelve months of Giving free to eligible churches. Parable is built on the official Planning Center API and depends entirely on that platform continuing to be good, which is worth stating plainly on the one page where we might be expected to say otherwise.
