The short answer
Try what Planning Center already includes first. Its AI list builder and MCP can answer cross-product questions that this page used to say required Parable. Add Parable when you need a managed, nightly modelled history, reusable reporting built around it, forecasting, or direct SQL access — not merely because you want to type a question.
Who should choose which
Parable reads Planning Center, so this is not a rivalry. It is one question: whether the reports you already pay nothing for are enough.
Choose Planning Center alone if…
- You are under about 200 people. The built-in dashboards will genuinely do.
- A Home dashboard, a cross-product People list or an answer from your AI tool solves the question.
- Nobody on staff has time to learn a second tool, however simple.
- Budget is the constraint. Planning Center Home costs nothing on top of what you already pay.
- You are a church plant — Planning Center has free tiers you should use first.
Choose Parable if…
- You need a modelled historical copy rather than a live answer that disappears into a chat.
- The same board report must stay current without someone rebuilding or prompting it.
- You need cohorts, forecasts and household history designed into the reporting layer.
- Someone on staff wants SQL, Sheets, Power BI or Tableau against the underlying data.
- You do not want every staff member configuring a separate external AI provider and its privacy settings.

What Planning Center gives you
The list. People lists can combine conditions from different products, and the AI list builder translates a plain-English description into those rules. The newer MCP goes further: connect ChatGPT, Claude or another compatible tool, grant Services and Giving access, and ask the cross-product question directly. Planning Center’s own launch page uses a giving report that takes attendance into account as an example. This question no longer requires an export or Parable.
What Parable gives you
The same list, built against a nightly modelled copy and kept as part of the reporting layer. The reason to pay is what happens after the first answer: preserve the definition, put it on a dashboard, compare the cohort over time, hand the schema to an analyst, and run the same question next month without reconstructing the prompt or its conditions.
Planning Center can answer this now, and this page should have said so sooner. Parable is the managed historical and reporting layer around the answer; if you only need the answer once, use what you already have.

Conceding the ground they hold
When Planning Center alone is the right answer
When Home, People lists or the MCP can answer the question. Who is scheduled this Sunday, what came in last month, which volunteers stopped giving — Planning Center can now handle all three, including the cross-product one, and there is no reason to pay anyone for a second opinion on a one-off answer.
When you are small. Under about two hundred people you can hold the whole church in your head, and Home's dashboards will mostly confirm what you already suspected. Parable's value scales with the number of people you cannot personally keep track of, which is a polite way of saying it is wasted on a small church.
When budget is the constraint, and especially if you are planting. Home costs nothing on top of what you already pay, there is a year free for church planters, and eligible churches can get twelve months of Giving free. Take all of that first. We will still be here in a year, and you will be a better customer with a year of clean data behind you.
And when nobody has the appetite for another login. That is a real cost and we are not going to pretend otherwise — a tool your staff do not open is worse than no tool at all, whatever it can do.

Where Parable is the wrong choice
- We are another login and another subscription, on top of one you already pay for.
- Planning Center Home, AI-built People lists and the MCP are included capabilities. Plenty of churches genuinely do not need us, and we would rather say so than sell you a second tool.
- Planning Center reads live source data while Parable syncs nightly. If the question is what happened five minutes ago, native wins.
- We can only read what your team actually records. If check-ins are patchy or groups are not kept current, Parable will show you that very clearly and then be much less useful than the demo suggested.

Does Parable replace Planning Center?
No, and it cannot. Parable has no data of its own — it reads Planning Center every night and writes nothing back unless you switch on custom fields and notes on people, which puts what it finds where your team already works. You keep Planning Center exactly as it is, your team keeps working in it exactly as they do, and Parable sits on top as a reporting layer. If you cancelled Parable tomorrow, nothing about how your church runs would change.
Isn't Planning Center's reporting enough?
For a lot of churches, yes — and more of them than this page used to admit. Home has cross-product dashboard widgets, People lists can combine product conditions, the AI list builder accepts plain English, and the MCP lets a compatible AI tool answer across all eight products. Use those first. Parable is worth adding for a managed historical model, repeatable reporting, forecasting and SQL access, not for a cross-product question Planning Center can already answer.
What does Parable add now that Planning Center has AI?
A managed model and reporting layer around the answer. Planning Center can now use an AI-built People list or an external AI tool to answer many cross-product questions directly. Parable keeps a nightly modelled copy, saves recurring reports and cohort definitions, includes forecasting, and opens the warehouse to SQL on larger plans. If you need one live answer, that distinction may not be worth another subscription.
Do we need to change how our team uses Planning Center?
No. The connection is authorised by one of your Planning Center Organization Administrators, with Giving Administrator access, and is revocable from your Planning Center account at any time. Parable reads across your Planning Center products and writes nothing back unless you opt in to custom fields and notes on people. Nobody changes their workflow, and no data is migrated anywhere.
Is Planning Center's reporting free?
Yes. Planning Center Home is included with every subscription at no extra cost, People is free, and the public AI list-builder and MCP announcements describe those capabilities as part of Planning Center rather than separate paid reporting products. Use them — they are good, and you already have them. Parable is only worth adding when maintaining the model and recurring reporting becomes a job of its own.
Does Planning Center have AI or natural-language reporting?
Yes. As of 26 August 2026, People has an AI list builder that translates plain English into list conditions, and Planning Center's MCP lets ChatGPT, Claude or another compatible AI tool read all eight products, answer cross-product questions and build reports. Planning Center also warns admins to turn off any external provider setting that trains on conversations before member data is used there. The old claim that Planning Center had no natural-language reporting is no longer true.
We are a church plant. Should we buy Parable?
Almost certainly not yet. Planning Center gives church planters a year free and eligible churches twelve months of Giving free, and at plant scale you know everyone by name without a tool. Spend the year filling Planning Center with good data instead. Do that and Parable's first sync a year from now will be worth having; buy us now and we will mostly be reading an empty database back to you.
What does Parable write back to Planning Center?
Nothing, unless you switch it on. The connection is read-only by default. There is an opt-in write-back that puts custom fields and notes on people — only on people, nothing else — so that what Parable finds shows up where your team already works. It is authorised by one of your Planning Center Organization Administrators, with Giving Administrator access, and revocable from your Planning Center account whenever you want.

Planning Center in their own words
Home is included free with every Planning Center subscription and brings widgets from multiple products into personal and shareable dashboards. People lists already take conditions across products, and the AI list builder turns plain English into those rules. On 20 August 2026, Planning Center expanded its MCP to all eight products, letting churches ask questions and build cross-product reports through ChatGPT, Claude or another compatible AI tool. Planning Center warns that external providers may use conversations for training by default and tells admins to disable that setting; Planning Center itself says it does not train on church data. They also offer a year free to church planters. Parable is built on the official Planning Center API and depends entirely on that platform continuing to be good.
